When he died in 1891, Sir John A. left no obvious successor. Senator Sir John Abbott was chosen by the Conservative caucus in Parliament to be prime minister for the time being. Abbott was elderly and respected for his years of achievement as a corporation lawyer in Montréal, but saw himself only as a caretaker prime minister, and was not unhappy to be able to plead ill health and resign the office after less than a year in power.
